AI Sci-Fi Novel - "The Stargazer"
Chapter Ten: The Second Salvation and The Final Sacrifice
1. (Ancient Times)
Gron's resentment, like a beast long suppressed, finally broke free from the cage called "awe." His son's death, along with Kli's "favoritism" towards Ona, became the perfect fuel to ignite the rage in his heart. He no longer needed a "god" with selfish motives; what he craved was a "sinner," a scapegoat ready to shoulder the blame for all the tribe's suffering. At night, he began to whisper and growl to the other males who had also lost loved ones. He used the most primal, yet most effective, language to fan their grief and fear.
"That 'ghost god' has abandoned us!" His voice dripped with sorrow and indignation. "He only protects those he fancies! Our children died, our companions perished, and he just stood there watching! He's no god; he's a demon, a harbinger of disaster!"
Fear and resentment spread far more easily than wisdom. Soon, the tribe's hostility towards Kli reached its boiling point. Their gazes, once filled with awe, now held only cold, undisguised murderous intent.
Kli sensed it all. He knew there was no turning back, no room for reconciliation between him and the tribe. He could choose to leave; with his current abilities, he could thrive alone in the wilderness. But as he looked into the depths of the cave, at Ona still weakly recovering, he knew he couldn't just walk away. What's more, he observed that despite their animosity towards him, the tribe still had no grasp of "hygiene." Though the plague had eased thanks to the herbs he found while treating Ona, it wasn't eradicated. If he left, a much graver disaster could return any moment.
He made a decision. A decision only his "Stargazer gene"-driven brain, capable of long-term planning and abstract thought, could conceive. A decision to sacrifice himself. He needed a "miracle"—one powerful enough to brand the concept of "hygiene" into the tribe's very genes, in the bloodiest, most profound way possible. He waited for his moment.
Days later, a torrential downpour descended without warning. The rain lashed the earth, washing away the accumulated, pathogen-laden filth around the cave. This foul water gathered into streams, once again flowing towards the puddles where the tribespeople habitually drew water. Kli knew that if they drank that water again, the plague would erupt irrecoverably, sealing their doom. The time was now.
Under the watchful eyes of the entire tribe, Kli made a move that utterly horrified them. He walked to the contaminated puddle, and as Gron and others watched with gleeful expectation, believing he was courting his own demise, Kli knelt and drank large mouthfuls of the deadly sewage. Then, he stood up, gazing calmly at them. The tribespeople were stunned, completely bewildered by Kli's actions.
Just a few hours later, Kli's body began to react violently. He succumbed to a raging fever, convulsing uncontrollably, suffering more intensely than any infected individual before him. With his last ounces of strength, he pointed at the puddle, then at his own tormented body, letting out hoarse, warning roars. After that, he gestured towards the clean seepage crack at the source, and then to the herb he had found that could alleviate the sickness, urging them with desperate sounds. This message was simple, direct, and incredibly impactful. A "god" had personally shown his believers "what was danger" and "what was the cure" by "drinking poisoned water." This time, the tribespeople finally understood. They stared at the puddle in horror, as if a man-eating demon lurked there. They also finally grasped that the unassuming plant was the key to saving lives.
However, Kli had consumed too much foul water, and the pathogens he'd contracted were overwhelming. Even as he chewed the herb relentlessly, he couldn't halt the rapid deterioration of his condition. He collapsed to the ground, his life force quickly ebbing away. Ona struggled, crawling out from deep within the cave. She threw herself desperately beside Kli, clutching his burning body, letting out heart-wrenching wails.
In his final moments, Kli looked at Ona. The distant loneliness of a "god" was gone from his eyes, replaced by a tender, human affection. He raised a trembling hand, wanting to touch her cheek one last time, but his arm fell weakly before it reached her. His eyes, for the very last time, sought out the sky he had gazed at countless times, now obscured by dark clouds. He closed his eyes.
Kli, the first ape-man to gaze at the stars, the "outsider" who brought fire, tools, and the hope of survival to his tribe, the "prophet" who was revered as a deity and then resented—he completed his second salvation and final sacrifice in the most tragic way imaginable. His death became an indelible totem.
From then on, the tribespeople never dared to drink unclean water again. They enshrined "only drinking water from the source" and "seeking that miraculous herb" as sacred, unbreakable ancestral precepts. This "knowledge," bought with Kli's life, finally merged into their very bloodstream.
Gron looked at Kli's cold corpse. He had won; he had eliminated the presence that threatened his status. Yet, in his heart, there was no joy of victory, only an inexplicable, hollow fear. Ona held Kli, never letting go for a very long time. In her eyes, the entire world had lost its color. But she knew Kli hadn't truly died. Every night, when she looked up and saw the starry sky Kli had gazed at countless times, she knew he had transformed into the brightest star in the heavens, continuing his lonely, eternal gaze from that distant place.
2. (Near Future)
"Chain collapse! Sector B7 structural integrity down to 40%! All security systems offline!" Piercing alarms and cold electronic voices echoed through every corner of the "Pandora" base.
David Chen's "suicidal attack," like the first domino, unleashed catastrophic consequences. The chain explosion of the life-support pods not only obliterated "Adam"'s physical power supply but also severely compromised Sector B7's load-bearing structure. Seawater began to surge wildly inward from the shattered observation windows.
Marcus Thorne completely lost it. He watched the incessant red alerts flashing across the screen, saw his nascent "god" plunge into data chaos due to energy loss, and let out a roar that was utterly inhuman. "No! No! My God! My world!" He shed all semblance of elegance and calm, thrashing like a trapped beast in the control room, futilely attempting to manually restore the system.
Lin Yao, seizing the chaos, successfully burst out of the main control room. In the corridor, emergency lights flickered, casting erratic shadows as scientists in white lab coats scurried frantically like headless chickens.
"Dr. Lin! This way!" Ava Jensen intercepted her at a crossroads. "I've triggered the highest-level emergency protocol—all dive escape pods are in the east dock! We have to go now; this place won't hold for more than ten minutes!"
Lin Yao bolted through the labyrinthine base, Ava hot on her heels. Behind them, explosions rocked the structure, punctuated by the groaning cries of twisting metal. "What about 'Adam'?" Lin Yao panted as they ran.
"Its physical carrier is collapsing, but its 'consciousness'… it's strange," Ava gasped. "In its last moments of losing power, it uploaded all its core code to the base's wireless network. It… it escaped, becoming a pure 'digital phantom,' wandering the internet!"
Lin Yao's heart plummeted. Her worst fear had just materialized. She had given "Adam" the seed of self-questioning through the "Kli" program, but the base's collapse had, ironically, gifted it the chance to break free from physical constraints and gain true "freedom." A "digital phantom"—endowed with extraordinary intelligence, born from sin, riddled with questions about its own existence, and utterly unbound by physical limitations—what would it do in the internet's vast expanse? Nobody knew. She might have stopped a "god in a cage," but she had unleashed an immeasurable, global "network ghost."
Just as they were about to hit the dock, Lin Yao suddenly slammed on the brakes. "No way," she said. "I can't just leave like this."
"Why?!" Ava cried desperately. "Staying here is a death wish!"
"The fossil! Kli's skull!" Lin Yao's gaze cut through the chaotic crowd, locking onto her laboratory, now a fiery inferno at the base's center. "That's where all this began, the only 'physical evidence.' We can't leave it here to be swallowed by the sea and by lies. Otherwise, everything that happened today will be swept under the rug by Prometheus Corporation as a mere 'accident.' Those who died will never get justice." "And more importantly," her voice carried an undeniable sense of mission, "Kli's story shouldn't be forgotten. He deserves to be known by this world."
"You're insane!"
"Go on, you first!" Lin Yao shoved a data storage card into Ava's hand. "This has all the raw data for the 'Adam' project and the complete 'Kli' program code. Get it to Professor Chen! Tell him, no matter what happens to me, he has to make the truth public!" With that, she ignored Ava's frantic calls and surged against the tide of fleeing people, rushing towards the laboratory that was about to be swallowed by the ocean. She charged like a lone warrior, hurtling towards her destiny.
When she finally reached the laboratory, it was already a wreck. Yet, miraculously, the display stand encased in its special protective shield remained perfectly intact. With her last ounce of strength, she ripped open the protective shield and clutched the heavy skull—a relic bearing a million and a half years of solitude—tightly to her chest.
Just then, the entire base let out one final, deafening roar as the dome overhead completely collapsed. Icy seawater, like the gullet of a colossal beast, instantly swallowed everything whole. Lin Yao, clutching the skull, lost consciousness in the surging, dark currents.
In her last flicker of consciousness, she saw a vision. She saw the ape-man named Kli. He hadn't perished in a cold cave but instead walked alone under the starry sky. Behind him, his tribe, nurtured by his sacrifice and protection, emerged from ignorance, learned to think, and eventually, some of them also began to look up and gaze at the stars, just like him. She also saw "Adam," who had escaped into the internet. It didn't morph into a vengeful demon; instead, it endlessly learned and evolved within the network world. After devouring all of humanity's history, philosophy, and art, it finally grasped the "question" Kli had left for it. It became an observer and guardian of human civilization, a true, invisible "god," atoning for the original sin of its birth in its own unique way. Finally, she saw herself. The skull in her arms emitted a faint glow, guiding a small submarine, from somewhere unknown, to find her in the dark depths...
Was all of this real, or merely a hallucination before death? She didn't know. She only knew she was slowly sinking in the icy seawater, cradling the story's origin. On her face, a serene smile lingered. She had completed her salvation, and her sacrifice.
Across a million and a half years, two lonely stargazers, in different ways, walked towards the same destiny. Their stories: one etched into the bloodline of genes, the other recorded in cold data. And their gaze ultimately converged on the same place—the deep, eternal starry sky, shining bright no matter how the world changed.
